General Information

Who are we?


SC C.A.P.E. is a statewide chapter of the Council for American Private Education (CAPE). CAPE is a coalition of national organizations and state affiliates serving private elementary and secondary schools. According to Private School Review, for the 2021-2022 school year there are 399 private schools serving 68,151 students in South Carolina, 76 percent of which are religiously affiliated. SC C.A.P.E. member organizations represent 264 private schools in South Carolina, approximately 95 percent of private school enrollment in the Palmetto State.

Mission and Goals

 SC C.A.P.E.’s mission is to preserve and promote the interests of students, families, and non-public schools in South Carolina. We are dedicated to fostering communication and cooperation within the private school community and with the public sector to improve the quality of education for children in South Carolina. SC C.A.P.E. encourages active participation in the Palmetto State’s legislative process to ensure we work towards a pluralistic education system that protects the best interests of the child and strengthens all our institutions to create a better tomorrow.

What do we do?

By speaking as a state-wide voice, SC C.A.P.E.:

  • promotes the vital role of private schools in American education and their significant contributions to educating the public and promoting the common good;

  • promotes the rights of parents to educate their children in the schools of their choice;

  • encourages excellence and pluralism in education and promotes the right of private schools to fulfill their unique missions;

  • fosters the participation of the private school community in shaping the nation’s education agenda, and develops and promotes positions on education policy;

  • advocates the equitable opportunity of private school students to participate in appropriate state and federal education programs;

  • monitors and analyzes legislation and regulations affecting private schools;

  • provides information about private education to policy-makers and the public;

  • keeps the private school community informed on issues and programs.
